Chhattisgarh is naturally rich in forests, water resources and minerals. The state has large reserves of minerals such as coal, iron ore, bauxite, limestone, tin and gold. Because of these resources, mining and industry play an important role in the state’s economy. Chhattisgarh holds the first position in India in tin production, while it is second in coal and iron ore production.

The availability of electricity, mineral resources and labour has helped many industries develop in the state. To encourage further industrial growth, the government has introduced the Industrial Development Policy 2024–30. The main objective of this policy is to use the natural resources of the state effectively and promote modern industries and innovation. The state is also working towards the long-term goal of “Developed Chhattisgarh by 2047.”

The government is focusing on promoting startups and small industries. For this purpose, incubation centres are being established to support new entrepreneurs and innovative ideas.

Tourism also has strong potential in Chhattisgarh, especially in tribal and natural areas. A village in Bastar district has been selected among the top tourism villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which highlights the tourism opportunities in the region.

To attract investment, the state government is improving the Ease of Doing Business by simplifying administrative procedures and increasing the use of digital technology in government services.

The government is also working on women empowerment. The Mahatari Vandan Yojana has helped improve women’s economic independence and their participation in family and social decision-making.

Chhattisgarh is also performing well in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to recent reports, most districts of the state fall in the “Front Runner” category, while a few are in the “Performer” category.

The economic progress of the state is measured through the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). GSDP represents the total value of goods and services produced within the state during a particular period.

In the economic structure of Chhattisgarh, different sectors contribute differently. Agriculture and allied activities contribute about 20.07%, the industry sector contributes the largest share with around 43.48%, and the service sector contributes about 36.45% to the state economy. ES-1

Overall, Chhattisgarh’s economy is largely supported by its mineral resources, industrial development, agriculture, and growing service sector.
